Tonight, everyone in my house was asleep by 8. With several hours to kill before bed, I picked up a beer magazine opened a bottle of Vino Vargas 2018 Petite Sirah, and turned on some jazz. (Side note: as I write this, a jazz cover of Pastime Paradise, samples of which, I’m embarrassed to just now learn, feed Gangster’s Paradise.)
We split a mix case with my aunt after she brought over a Vino Vargas Cab, which was terrific.
I can’t say I’ve had a lot of Petite Sirah in my day. But the few I have had have been rich, flavorful, and really big bold wines. They have been wines that probably should be served with food.
The Vino Vargas Petite Sirah is much more delicate. Translucent ruby in color, it still packs some nice tannins without being overpowering. Raspberry, chocolate, and some lavender. It’s not what I was expecting, but overall a nice wine.
- Would I get it again? No. Liked the wine, but would reach for something else next time.
- Would I drink it if someone gave it to me? Absolutely. It’s a perfectly nice wine.
- Would I drink more than one? I had two glasses this evening.
- Would I recommend you try it? I would recommend you try other wines at Vino Vargas first.
- Good while __: Reading about Belgian trippel, and ganging out with Herbie Hancock.
